One of the first decisions a homeowner needs to consider is the design of the home. Although we offer standard plans from various sources, most of our homes are custom-designed to meet the specific clients needs and inspired by the natural characteristics of the land. Understanding people's lifestyles, listening to their wishes, and considering the individuality of the site contributes to the most successful design solutions. My background in interior design provides an end-vision approach to home design, with a better understanding of how people really use thier homes and how traffic flows through it. This enables me to attend to details that others only think of later, like furniture placement factors and balance of visual elements with functional. We prefer to design homes using natural products, prep for lower maintenance and longevity, and use energy-efficient methods and environmentally-conscious "green" building practices. Our designs incorporate elements of universal design for easier living environments for all, and Susanka's "Not So Big" concept of placing importance in higher quality building methods and materials over larger-than-needed spaces.
Whether you choose our custom design, a plan from one of our books, or one you bring to us, we will build your home with the same attention and committment. Unlike production building, we plan on a longer timeframe, which allows us to do the details that we think are important, whether you can see them or not. We prefer to give the subcontractors the time it takes to do the job well, instilling pride in their work. We know that no home is perfect, but think that in striving to be, you get a lot closer. We are open to new and proven products and methods of construction. We have experience in active and passive solar, geothermal, and radiant, as well as dual fuel heating systems. We've used standard and engineered lumber systems, poured concrete, ICFs (concrete-filled styrofoam blocks) and many other innovative building products. We attend trade shows and research to learn of the new advances of the building industry, while embracing the tried and true methods of the past.
